Are You Running on Empty?
Have you ever reached the end of the day and wondered where all your energy has gone? You’ve worked through your to-do list, helped everyone else, met the deadlines, put dinner on the table and finally sat down—only to realise you have absolutely nothing left in the tank.
Sound familiar? It certainly does to me!
For years, particularly during my time in the corporate world, I was very good at burning the midnight oil. There were deadlines to meet, people needing help and, of course, I was always happy to put my hand up. I’d often take on more than I should, struggle to say no and somehow squeeze just one more thing into an already full day.
The problem is, when we continually put ourselves at the bottom of the list, something eventually has to give. And often, it’s our health.
When Being Busy Becomes Our Normal

I think many women are incredibly good at looking after everyone else, but not always so good at looking after themselves. We’re juggling work, family, relationships and responsibilities, often telling ourselves we’ll slow down next week, get an early night tomorrow or make time for ourselves when things settle down.
But when does that actually happen?
Over time, constantly pushing through can leave us feeling exhausted, foggy-headed, irritable and simply not ourselves. We might rely on coffee to get through the afternoon, struggle to switch off at night or wake up feeling just as tired as when we went to bed.
For women moving through their 40s, 50s and beyond, hormonal changes and disrupted sleep can add another layer to the picture. Our energy levels can be influenced by many things, including our lifestyle, stress, nutrition, sleep and overall health.
If fatigue is persistent, unexplained or affecting your everyday life, don’t simply put it down to being busy or getting older. It’s worth speaking with a healthcare professional to explore what might be contributing to it.
It’s Not About Doing More

Here’s something I’ve had to learn myself: being busy doesn’t necessarily mean we’re being productive, and saying yes to everyone else can often mean saying no to ourselves.
We don’t need another complicated routine or a long list of things we should be doing. Sometimes, supporting our energy starts with going back to basics.
That might mean prioritising a good night’s sleep, nourishing our bodies with wholesome food, drinking enough water and moving in ways that we enjoy. It could be taking a walk instead of answering one more email, leaving something until tomorrow or simply saying no without feeling guilty.
And let’s not underestimate the value of taking a few moments to pause and breathe. We don’t always need to fill every spare minute. Giving ourselves permission to slow down can be just as important as getting things done.
Most importantly, don’t wait until you’re completely burnt out before deciding that your health matters.
A Little Reminder From Me to You
I’m still learning to practise what I preach. I love helping people, getting things done and being someone others can rely on. But I’m also realising that I need to give myself the same care and attention I encourage others to give themselves.
Your energy is precious. You don’t have to earn your rest, prove your worth by how much you do or get everything perfect.
Perhaps it’s time to stop asking, “How much more can I fit into my day?” and start asking, “What do I need to feel good, healthy and energised again?“
Because health matters. And that includes yours!
